Around the sun

Leaving New York es el primer single de Around the sun. Se trata de un disco marcado profundamente por la actual situación política, cuya fecha de lanzamiento es un mes anterior a las elecciones presidenciales en Estados Unidos.

Michael Stipe (vocalista de R.E.M.) no ha ocultado su rechazo hacia la guerra y hacia el gobierno de su país: "Para bien o para mal, el estado actual del mundo ha tenido una gran influencia en mis letras. Nuestro nuevo disco no será en absoluto deprimente, porque incluso la canción más triste contendrá un poquito de esperanza pero éste va a ser un disco muy intenso y con un mensaje bastante comprometido políticamente diría yo" declaró a la revista Rolling Stone.

Stipe añadió: "En estos tiempos, como americano, creo que debo ser el pacificista más enfadado del mundo y pero sé que no soy el único que se siente así".

Around the sun es el disco nº 21 de su carrera. (Esta cifra incluye sus álbumes de estudio, discos en directo, bandas sonoras y su reciente disco recopilatorio "In Time: The best of R.E.M."), y cuenta una gran novedad. Tras la retirada del batería original de la banda Bill Berry, el nuevo disco supone el debú discográfico con R.E.M. de Bill Rieflin, ex-batería de la banda de rock industrial / metal Ministry. Aunque Rieflin ya participó en la anterior gira, nunca había grabado un álbum de estudio con el grupo. "Fue una propuesta de Peter (Buck). Peter creyó que Bill nos podía aportar mucho y llevarnos en una nueva dirección. Luego me di cuenta de que su forma de tocar se complementa muy bien con mi manera de cantar y eso es fantástico". Sobre su nuevo disco, Michael Stipe comenta: "posiblemente sea la colección de 13 canciones más ecléctica que hayamos juntado. Sin duda sorprenderá a nuestros fans y puede que causará sensación en los demás".

Entre los 13 temas del disco se incluye una versión nueva del tema que ya publicaron en internet unos meses antes: Final Straw.

Las guerras, la muerte y el sufrimiento, han dado como fruto un disco en la línea de Automatic For The People. Aparte del primer single otras canciones destacables son Aftermath, Boy In The Well, Electron Blue y The Outsiders, que cuenta con la colaboración del rapero Q-Tip (de A Tribe Called Quest y Deee-Lite). Otras colaboraciones en el disco corren a cargo de: Scott McCaughey (The Young Freshfellows), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) y la comentada de Bill Rieflin (Ministry).

El disco ha sido grabado/mezclado en tres estudios distintos y en dos etapas ya que el proceso se interrumpió para publicar el grandes éxitos In Time (octubre 2003) y para la gira mundial del mismo año. La primera parte de la grabación se llevó a cabo en Vancouver (Canadá) para luego trasladarse a latitudes más tropicales: el estudio Compass Point (Nassau) en las islas Bahama y en The Hit Factory/Criteria Studios de Miami. Finalmente la masterización del resultado final se llevó a cabo en los estudios de Sterling Sound en New York.
