Cuenta Michael que Jet black heart: "es una canción que surgió en un estudio situado en un sótano realmente oscuro. Estábamos trabajando con dos colegas, John Green y David Rodgers. David de hecho trabajó en el primer álbum de Evanescence. Trabajamos en distintas maneras de representar el concepto de JET BLACK HEART y finalmente terminamos con un estribillo que empieza con el acorde V, algo bastante inusual, pero que creo suena muy bien. Luego le añadimos una guitarra rítmica y el resultado final parece encajar perfectamente con el mensaje. Trata sobre las personas que son emocionalmente frágiles, reservadas y a las que les cuesta mucho relacionarse con otra gente".
La canción cuenta con un vídeo dirigido por Tom Van Schelven, estrenado el 17 de diciembre de 2015. Los chicos de 5SOS pidieron a sus fans que les echaran una mano. Pidieron que les contaran historias. La participación fue espectacular.
