Dan Smith comentó: "'Shut off the lights' trata de salir de la ansiedad de nuestros futuros miedos gracias a las personas que tenemos a nuestro lado. Trata de la intimidad, de la verdadera conexión, de rechazar nuestras preocupaciones sobre nuestra vida y el futuro por un momento y desconectar de todo para estar presente en el ahora. Es un momento real, humano, divertido en mitad de un gran disco. Pero además es una canción que hace un guiño al Graceland de Paul Simon y a un montón de música que amamos. Nos hizo bailar por todo el estudio y es súper divertida de tocar en directo".
