Life of the party es el primer single de composición propia de Shawn Mendes y supone su debut para el sello Island Records. Se incluye en el álbum Handwritten (2015).
Nacido y criado en los suburbios de Toronto, hijo de un portugués y de una británica, Shawn Mendes nació el 8 de agosto de 1998. Aprendió a tocar la guitarra por su cuenta y también a modular su voz tras pasarse horas y horas observando versiones de otros artistas en la red. El primer clip que posteó en Vine sirvió para mostrarnos "un cantante con alma de John Mayer y con la inspiración de alguien mucho más avanzado en años". Entre las versiones que interpretó y posteó en la red, se encuentran "Wanted" (Hunter Hayes), "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen), "Sweater weather" (the Neighbourhood), Counting stars (OneRepublic), Give me love (Ed Sheeran), Free fallin' (Tom Petty), Skyscraper (Demi Lovato) y más.
En cuanto se editó, el single Life of the party se colocó directamente en el #1 de I-tunes en USA y Canadá y en el Top 5 en otros 13 países. En España fue top 10.
Hablando acerca del tema en cuestión Shawn comenta: "la canción trata de lo importante que es sentirse a gusto con uno mismo. Cuando tienes 15 años y estás en el instituto, eso es lo que más nos preocupa el averiguar quién eres y quien quieres ser, en quien te quieres convertir
".
