Robert Smith: "Es la canción que abrió el disco; tan pronto como tuvimos esa pieza musical grabada supe que era la canción de apertura, y sentí que todo el álbum se enfocaba. Llevaba un tiempo luchando por encontrar la frase de apertura adecuada para la canción de apertura adecuada, trabajando con la simple idea de 'estar solo', siempre en el fondo de mi mente esa molesta sensación de que ya sabía cuál debía ser la frase de partida... en cuanto terminamos de grabar me acordé del poema 'Dregs' del poeta inglés Ernest Dowson... y ese fue el momento en que supe que la canción -y el álbum- eran reales".
