A. C. Newman, líder y cantante de la banda que también ha producido el álbum, cuenta: "Hay tantas canciones en plan 'el algo del amor' - ya sabes, está 'The Book of Love', 'Freeway of Love'…Así que pensé en el concepto de 'caerse de las escaleras de tu amor' y creí que funcionaba", explica A.C. Newman. "Creo que tiene ese elemento de cómo te enfrentas con las ideas de amor y felicidad en este mundo ahora mismo? Cuando lo que te pasa es estresante, influye en las relaciones de la gente, y tú, que estás tratando de averiguar cómo ser feliz en una relación amorosa en este mundo que parece tan feo, no es tan fácil como parece. Por supuesto, en el título de la canción, el 'amor'(love) se ha transformado al final en 'sonrisa' (smile), pero me gusta la metáfora del amor como algo de lo que te caes".
